Denton Church Mission Trip to NYC

The Denton Wesleyan Church sent 38 people to Brooklyn, New York over the weekend of Nov. 21-23.  The team took coats, blankets, toiletries, scarves, gloves, hats, and other warm clothing to assist residents in the winter months.  The team also took hygiene packs, food and blankets to the homeless in a park in Manhattan.

DWC offers the same assistance to the Denton and South Davidson community through their CHAMP (Community Health And Mentoring Project) center.  The center is a 501c3 that provides food, clothes, children's and teen educational programs, and a community meal monthly.

The church and the CHAMP center have distributed over 500 bags of groceries, served over 1400 meals (and delivered over 300 more), provided 75 families with school supplies, provided hundreds of coats, blankets, and clothes, as well as helping several families with minor home repair needs.

Local Church News - Winston Salem El Aposento Alto

November 16 the Winston Salem El Aposento Alto church graduated 17 from their Leadership School. Congratulations to Pastors Tomas Manchego, Marina Manchego, and Amelia Manchgeo for their good work.  The El Aposento Alto Church is moving forward for God as they train leaders for kingdom work.  The following is an statement from Pastor Amelia Manchego about the graduation.

“My people perish for lack of knowledge”……Hosea 4:6

This bible truth has always been in our work as a church to prepare our congregation. We give thanks to the Lord, for letting us conclude the 7th   graduation ceremony for our “Leadership School”. It was 17 students that during the year were studying this course of “Leadership with purpose”. Thru these 7 years we could see that the person, the family and the church has been strengthening with God’s special touch thru this study.  The church in 2015 has the vision of “expanding the territory” we are developing a personal evangelical program.  Our “Christian Education School” will keep preparing new believers to be leaders to work for God.

Fayetteville Faith - Human Trafficking Awareness Walk

The following is an article that was in the Fayetteville Observer newspaper on October 29.

On Saturday, the congregation of Fayetteville Faith Wesleyan Church will spotlight an issue of which many people are unaware.

Pastor Cyndi McClendon invites the community to join with church members for a Human Trafficking Awareness Walk from 8 to 10 a.m. to raise awareness of the matter. Participants will walk up and down Legion Road, from East Mountain Drive to Black and Decker Road.

Church member Kim Fox has volunteered as an assistant with the walk. She says her church has been raising awareness of the issue for years.

"The Wesleyan Church is very involved with the human trafficking position," she said. "A few years ago, they had done a stop child trafficking walk in downtown Fayetteville, and our church was a part of that."

Fox said Faith Wesleyan held a small human trafficking awareness walk last year. About 50 members of the congregation walked laps around the church's property.

"We are bringing awareness to all human trafficking, and I think that it has been brought to light in our congregation and in our community, that it is something that is here. We have had issues in our own area that have come to light."

To further support the cause, Faith Wesleyan Church makes donations to Emma's Home. Established in 2012, Emma's Home is a safe house in Durham where youth and female victims of human trafficking can heal and restore their lives.

The church also contributes to The Fayetteville Dream Center. The faith-based, nonprofit organization serves people in Fayetteville and the surrounding areas. One of the center's main objectives is to combat human trafficking by partnering with national and statewide organizations such as; 5 Sparrows, NC Stop, SCTNow and others "to end this injustice and rescue people from captivity," as stated on the center's website.

"It's one of those things that we have heard of happening in foreign countries, but it actually has happened here," McClendon said.

McClendon said that, recently, one of her parishioners had a raid take place near their home, and it was discovered that human trafficking was taking place.

"It just hits home,'' she said. "It hits in our neighborhood and it hits the communities we are trying to serve. It has rocked Fayetteville's world. We need people to realize that this is a Fayetteville issue."

She hopes the community will take part in the walk and help spread awareness.

"We just decided to keep walking, not to raise money but to bring awareness," McClendon said. "Just sign in and start walking. We want people walking continually up and down Legion Road."

Members from the congregation will carry the church's flag along with banners and signs noting the cause.

"It's going to be a positive picket. We want good people to stand up and say 'I'll help change it," McClendon said. "While we can't go out and arrest people, we can't go and investigate, we can't stop what is going on, but we can raise awareness within the community."

Members of Faith Wesleyan Church believe the walk will not only raise awareness about human trafficking, but encourage the community to be more proactive in helping those in need.

"We want people to know the church cares. We care about the victims and we even care about the people who are perpetrating the concern, but we also care that they get disciplined," McClendon said. "I want people to intervene and to help those who cannot help themselves."

Faith Wesleyan Church is located at 2922 Legion Road. For more information on the Human Trafficking Awareness Walk, call 424-5908.

Reidsville Covington Wesleyan Church Honors First Responders

Every day our community is served by Rockingham County’s finest men and women.  They fulfill roles that are seldom recognized until the moment that there is a tragedy.  Accidents, fires, or assaults create emergencies that shake the very foundation of our faith, often leaving us reeling in the wake of its aftermath.  It is at these very moments that we come face to face with the first responders who are committed to serve and protect the people of our county.  These are the unsung heroes who courageously put their lives on the line, and for that, they deserve our gratitude.

On October 19th, Covington Wesleyan Church held a special service to honor the many leaders and first responders of Rockingham County.  Over five hundred people attended the church on Vance Street in Reidsville to show their love and appreciation for those who perform tasks beyond the call of duty in order that we can enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Sunday morning’s message “You Are Our Heroes,” was given by Rev. Ralph Clayton and directed toward the personnel who truly deserve to be called heroes.

Following the morning service, the first responders and community leaders were welcomed to a reception where they were each presented with a First Responder’s Bible to assist them with the struggles that accompany the difficult situations that are faced daily.  Covington Church wants our county’s police officers, firefighters, EMS technicians, and all others in this line of responsibility to know that they are being prayed for and supported by a community of people who recognize the sacrifices that are made for each one of us and this is a small way that we can extend our gratitude.

Micah Movement News

We often ask what we can do regarding Anti- Human Trafficking. Prayer is needed.

I have been in communication with a NC Human Trafficking Commission member this week, following my attending the Commission’s meeting in September. The members of the Commission will be making considerations for recommendations to the NC General Statutes Commission. Please pray the Commission members will respond with favorable recommendations to several efforts which will help bring hope to victims of human trafficking. One of these is the posting of the National Human Trafficking Hotline Number (888-3737-888) in places where victims might be found. This is time sensitive as the Commission must have this piece completed by November  7.

Elizabeth Dole honored by IWU

Article

By Alan Miller | Oct 6, 2014

Elizabeth Dole honored as IWU World Changer

Elizabeth Hanford Dole, whose influence extends from the highest levels of American government to the world’s largest humanitarian organization, was inducted into the Indiana Wesleyan University Society of World Changers during homecoming activities on Friday.

Dole, a former U.S. senator and president of the American Red Cross, was honored at a convocation in the IWU Chapel Auditorium. IWU established the Society in 2003 to recognize role models who have exemplified the concept of world changers and whose lives can serve as an inspiration to future generations.

A native of North Carolina, Dole was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University and then earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a Master of Arts degree in teaching from Harvard.

During her career in government, she has helped open doors for women by becoming:

·         The first woman to be appointed U.S. Secretary of Transportation. She later served as Secretary of Labor.

·         The first woman to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate.

·         The first woman candidate from a major political party to be considered a viable candidate for the U.S. presidential nomination.

Dole was the second woman to head the American Red Cross and completely restructured the organization during her eight years in that job. In 2012, Dole founded the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to raise awareness and support for more than one million caregivers of our nation’s wounded warriors. She has been married for 39 years to former U.S. Senator Bob Dole, who also was the 1996 Republican nominee for president.

Her friends, Pastor Ernest and Susan Mullins, brought IWU’s attention to Senator Dole as a person worthy of this ‘World Changer’ honor. Pastor Ernest and Susan were present at the event to represent the NC East District and celebrate this occasion with their friend.

Wesleyan Justice Network

The Story

The Wesleyan Justice Network has been birthed out of a desire to see the Wesleyan Church return to the roots of its story. For our story as a denomination begins with a response to the great injustice of slavery and a willingness to stand against the tide and fight for abolition in the name of justice. The Wesleyan Justice Network is committed to reengaging with this wonderful heritage that we as a church should reclaim, honor, and propagate in this world full of injustice.

Why Justice?

Justice is a word that the church must redeem if we are going to be the agents of justice that our God of justice has called us to be. Justice is the most consistent and broadest word that we find throughout the Bible when God is talking about what should be. Our desire is that we as Wesleyans would lock arms with each other and advance the kingdom by tackling the issues of injustice ravaging our world today.

Areas of Focus

Biblical Justice can be a broad concept and we desire to wrestle with it as a vital aspect of our theology and doctrine and also give it some specific focus within our denomination. Our initial areas of focus are already resonating within our denomination. Our goal is to be supportive and not prescriptive with our resources.

1.     Fighting Human Trafficking

2.     Caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)

3.     Gender Issues – Violence Against Women (VAW), Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

4.     Ethical Consumption – Fair Trade intensive

Strategies

Our strategies of engagement are multi-faceted and will be designed to be easy to use regardless of where you are on your justice journey.

1.     Use of Social Media – check us out on Facebook and Twitter. Website coming soon.

2.     Provide a Roadmap for engagement with God’s heart for Justice.

3.     Provide networking opportunities at a variety of conferences and events.

4.     Facilitate conversation, partnership, and cooperation between individuals, churches, districts, and organizations strongly engaging in best practices in the justice arena.

Women's Ministries - Mustard Seed Gathering

Seventy-eight women from across The Wesleyan Church of North America gathered in Cincinnati, OH, September 27-29, 2013, for the Mustard Seed Gathering. The purpose was to hear about the future of women’s ministry for The Wesleyan Church, network, and chart a course toward effective Kingdom impact.

There was an overwhelmingly positive response from people who attended the Mustard Seed Gathering. And on the tail end of many of the positive reports was a comment to the effect of; "I want to share some of these ideas and provide networking opportunities for my church and my district."

There seems to be a groundswell of desire to do more. This desire has evolved into Mustard Seed Gathering: Local. These cooperative conversations on the local level are bringing together women leaders to talk about different ways to connect to God and to the local church for maximum Kingdom impact.

Join the North Carolina East district for our very own Mustard Seed Gathering on Saturday, September 27th from 9am to 4:30pm at the Thomasville Mt. Zion Connection Center. Cost is $10 per person. Preregister by September 20 to Wanda Trogdon at 336-381-3510 or wtrogdon@rtmc.net
