Eden Trinity Helps with Operation Christmas Child
Eden Trinity Wesleyan had 12 volunteers go to Samaritan's Purse in Boone, NC on December 17th to help pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes come to the distribution center already packed from local churches. Then the volunteers go through the boxes to make sure that there is nothing in the boxes that should not be there. They also add more items if needed. Then the boxes are packed up and ready to be shipped. This is something that Eden Trinity has been doing for several years, along with collecting packed shoe boxes from their church. This year they were able to send 74 boxes for children around the world.

The Micah Movement..... January Focus....Addiction and Suicide
Some statistics show suicide is considered the eighty-dominant cause of death in the United States and 29,000 to 30,000 take their life annually. Even greater numbers of people attempt suicide. The number of suicides reported amongst younger adults under the age of 30 has made a alarmingly tragic increase. Death by suicide, climbed to be the third leading cause of death for young people age of 15 to 24 years old. The Micah Movement is asking our local churches to help us focus on this during the month of January.
To bring this to the local church, the following options are being suggested:
The first is the screening of TO SAVE A LIFE. A powerfully inspiring film featuring the struggles of high school friends dealing with life out of control and realizing, one person can make a difference. This film is PG-13 and available on blu-Ray and DVD. Shop the website, amazon.com, Life Way Christian Book Store, Family Christian Stores,
The next option is resourcing the professional counselors/therapist available in your church/community. Ask they teach of the warning signs/risk factors associated to suicide and how to respond.
Additionally.... our own Micah Movement team members, Josh Stegenga and Josh LeRoy are available to give a presentation / conduct a teaching session on this issue. Josh Stegenga is founder of a non-profit called HIS SCARS TO OUR SCARS in High Point. He works with those dealing with an addiction or at risk of suicide. He can be reached at 336/491-2736 or
healinginthewound@live.com . Josh LeRoy has written a book dealing with depression and suicide. He regularly deals with these issues in his ministry. He can be reached at 336/626-8974 or joshleroy6@hotmail.com

THE COMPASSION EXPERIENCE VISITS CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA
CHANGE THE STORY: THE COMPASSION EXPERIENCE VISITS CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA
Interactive Tour hosted by newhope church Immerses People Into The Real Life World Of Impoverished Children On Three Continents
Durham, NC - The Compassion International Mobile Experience tour makes a 4 day stop in Durham at newhope church Central Campus on December 13-16, 2013. The tour kicked off in Knoxville on July 19 and is making its way across the country to educate people about the lives of the more than 1.3 million children Compassion serves globally. Here is a video highlighting the experience - http://www.compassion.com/change/about-the-experience-video.htm
The Change The Story: The Compassion Experience is two trailers totaling 3,500 square foot that feature replicas of the homes of three Compassion beneficiaries who live in extreme poverty on three separate continents. In the twenty minutes it takes to tour the facility, visitors will fully experience the despair of poverty as they are immersed in littered streets and sounds of insecurity surrounding a closet-sized dwelling.
“It is our hope that people who walk through Change The Story will personally experience and celebrate the transformation of so many lives of children living in poverty, and, through that, realize their own personal transformation as so many do when they travel abroad and see poverty first hand.”
Created in a warehouse in Central City, Kentucky, Change The Story brings Americans as close as possible to the realities of over 1.3 million Compassion beneficiaries in 26 countries, whose households survive on less than USD$1 per day. Change the Story will stop at over 35 towns and travel 65,000 miles of the United States in a year.
newhope church is excited to host Change the Story, and sees it as a powerful tool to help people experience poverty and realize the blessings so many have in America. They hope it motivates people to further invest themselves into this great global cause. They extend the invitation to all in the central North Carolina area to participate in this free event and open to all!

There were 87 in attendance on this holiday weekend to experience awesome worship and the passionate sharing of the Word. Under the leadership of Pastor Josh Moses and a solid 40-member core team, this church is already doing a great job of reaching into the community. Over this past year they have developed a strong core, small groups, worship band, children’s ministry and partnership with Southwest Guilford High School. Through work relationships, the majority of their congregation is comprised of young, un-churched families searching for truth. Please join in praying for and supporting this new church with so much potential. You may send words of encouragement and congratulations to Pastor Josh at joshmoses36@gmail.com.
Typhoon Haiyan, most powerful ever in the Philippines, causes great suffering
Dr. Lyon calls for prayers and funds to assist our Wesleyan brothers and sisters in the Philippines. (Wesleyan Emergency Relief Fund)
On Friday, November 8, with sustained winds of 195 mph and gusts as strong as 235 mph, Typhoon Haiyan was the second-strongest cyclone or hurricane to hit land anywhere in recorded history when it struck the Philippines. Many of the hardest-hit areas are still unable to communicate with the outside. The city of Tacloban (population 220,000) has unconfirmed estimates from government officials of over 10,000 deaths due to storm surges and massive waves filling much of the city to the second story level. On Leyte Island, where Tacloban is, Red Cross staffers also report deaths in the thousands, and hundreds more on neighboring islands in the central Philippines.
Large ships were flung ashore. Neighborhoods near the ocean are simply gone. Untold thousands of homes were smashed, flooded or lost their roofs. In the wake of the storm, official estimates suggest that 9.5 million people are affected, with 600,000 displaced from their homes. Many of the survivors are desperately searching for food and water, and rampant looting is taking place in urban areas.
The government states that the core of the storm hit 36 provinces and 270 cities and towns in central Philippines. Rescue and relief efforts are just beginning, but many roads are still impassable, blocked by debris. The Philippines is prone to be hit by typhoons, but this one was the equivalent of an exceptionally strong category 5 hurricane. It was so powerful that the 10-13 foot storm surge and 2-story-high waves coming onshore in some areas resembled a great tsunami and it caused that degree of destruction.
Some of the areas hardest hit, but out of contact so far, include northern Cebu, the island of Panay, and parts of Palawan and Mindoro.
Not only have hundreds of thousands lost their homes and have little or no food available, but businesses and vast agricultural resources have been destroyed, removing the livelihood of many people indefinitely.
The Wesleyan Church has had a strong presence in the Philippines since before WWII. Since 1972, The Wesleyan Church of the Philippines has been a dynamic and growing General Conference, with several hundred churches throughout the Philippines. Currently the General Superintendent there is Dr. Albert Patacsil.
General Superintendent Patacsil indicates that we have some churches and other ministries in the affected areas, but reports are very incomplete as some churches are out of contact. His latest update stated that:
- 1. We have no reports of Wesleyans losing their lives at this time.
- 2. Roofs of several buildings and the tabernacle at Visayan Bible College on the island of Cebu were damaged. Pastors’ families and other members suffered damage to homes in Cebu.
- 3. In the island of Mindoro where the source of income is primarily agricultural, there was great infrastructural damage to crops, including fruit trees. World Hope International ministries to children are also located in Mindoro. All of the children are alive, but there is no food available for them.
- 4. The most severe losses are on the island of Leyte, but loss of communication has made it impossible to contact our brethren there as yet.
Wesleyan churches in the Bicol area are being used as evacuation centers. Our church in Guinobatan became a refuge for community people. The Wesleyan church in Legaspi is a distribution centre for relief supplies. Further updates will be posted as they are known.
The Wesleyan Church of North America has communicated to Dr. Patacsil that we stand with them, not only in prayer, but in financial assistance, as well. The Wesleyan Emergency Relief Fund is accepting donations and sent $10,000 immediately, with more to follow as churches and individuals respond to this relief appeal through the Wesleyan Emergency Relief Fund.

District Calendar Changes
Robbins First Celebrates Esther Hurley Day
On October 27, First Wesleyan Church in Robbins celebrated Ethel Hurley Day. Ethel Hurley was pleasantly surprised at the beginning of the 11:00 worship service when Pastor Sam Swinney read a proclamation declaring their intent to “honor a special lady today.” When Ethel’s name was called out, you could tell from the expression on her face that the entire congregation had kept the activities (which had been in the planning stages for several months) a well kept secret. Ethel was called to the platform where she was presented with a corsage and told that the flowers on the communion table were also hers to take home and enjoy. When Ethel arrived on the platform, she was also surprised to see approximately 15 relatives who had come for this special day. Pastor Sam then read a poem he had composed just for Ethel to commemorate this special day in her life. Karen Swinney, Pastor Sam’s wife, read a letter from one of Ethel’s dearest and closest friends who could not be there for this celebration. Ethel was escorted back to her seat so that she could view a PowerPoint presentation that included photographs of Ethel throughout various stages of her life. When the ushers came forward to receive the morning offering, one usher carried a money tree and the other usher carried a basket of cards (from family and friends) for Ethel.
Following the morning message, in which thoughts of Ethel’s faithfulness were mentioned several times, a dinner was held in the church fellowship hall. Several people in the community said that Ethel was still talking about the event of the day even toward the end of the week. One lady said that Ethel deserved this honor because she has helped out, sat with, taught and delivered meals to so many people in the Robbins area. Ethel (who is in her eighties) has been faithful to the church, and has taught the Kindergarten Sunday school class for over 60 years (and she is still teaching it today).
